Dutasteride (Avodart) Targets
Hair Loss and Enlarged Prostates!
Dutasteride (Avodart) was
developed by the group GlaxoSmithKline, and is an FDA approved drug. It
is in a class of drugs called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. It was
developed for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged
prostate, and acts by blocking the production of a natural substance
that enlarges the prostate gland.
In treating prostate
conditions with Dutasteride, patients have noted improved symptoms of
BPH, and a reduced incidence of acute urinary retention.
Other
Benefits
Clinical research has
also discovered that Dutasteride is effective in treating male pattern
hair loss. Studies concluded that men who suffer from male pattern hair
loss or BPH have increased levels of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
DHT is a by-product of
testosterone and is produced by an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase.
Biochemical analyses reveal that men who suffer BPH appear to have
higher levels of 5-alpha-reductase in their bloodstreams and in their
scalps. Conversely, less of this enzyme is found in men who do not
suffer with BPH or male pattern hair loss.
By blocking the type I
and type II enzymes that form DHT, Dutasteride inhibits
5-alpha-reductase. The blocking action disrupts a key process in the
development of male pattern hair loss, and in development of BPH.
In
March, 2007, the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, printed the results of
a study comparing the effectiveness of Dutasteride vs. a placebo in
patients with male pattern hair loss (or androgenetic alopecia). The
trial, which was a randomized, double-blind placebo controlled, single
center study, involved 17 pairs of identical twin males over a 12 month
period. One twin from each pair was given a 0.5mg dose Dutasteride
while the other received a placebo. Hair counts, photographs and
self-assessment questionnaires were used to evaluate the rate of hair
growth. At the conclusion of the 12 month period and based on analysis
of the evaluating criteria, it was established that Dutasteride
significantly improved hair growth compared with the placebo. The
Journal thus suggested that the trial provided evidence enough to
demonstrate that Dutasteride significantly reduced the progression of
hair loss in men suffering with male pattern baldness.
