If an individual has abnormally altered prolactin levels, this can have a profound effect on different areas of the body, including the reproductive system, sex drive and their mood and wellbeing. The most common condition associated with prolactin alteration is Hyperprolactinemia – this is where there is an excess of prolactin in the blood, and it is typically caused by benign tumours in the pituitary gland (although certain medications and other health conditions can also cause Hyperprolactinemia).
Please note that pregnancy, breastfeeding and physical stress will/can also cause minimal rises in prolactin levels – these are classed as “normal”.
