Tanning (darkening skin color)

Melanin is a natural pigment that gives the skin it’s colour. To look tanned, you need to increase the melanin levels in your body. This can be done by exposing the skin to UV rays from the sun or artificially through tanning beds – both of these work by actually causing damage to the cells on the outer layer of the skin. The skin then tries to prevent further injury to the outer layer by producing the darker colour, which is the resulting tan. However, UV rays are known to cause cancer if used or exposed excessively, and can also lead to skin aging, eye damage and a suppressed immune system.

Certain dietary supplements and sprays can be used to increase melanin within the skin without having to regularly expose your skin to direct sunlight.
