Weight gain is an increase of body weight which could be a result of increased fat deposits, muscle mass, fluids (water) and many other factors. There are many reasons as to why one may gain weight, such as poor sleep, little exercise, and the most common reason, eating too much food for the body. Weight gain has many negative side effects, such as hypertension (high blood pressure), high and low cholesterol, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, body pain and in the worst case, death.
For most, weight gain can be controlled by eating within the body’s calories, avoiding processed foods, staying active, getting a sufficient amount of sleep and reducing alcohol intake. However, weight gain can be the result of a medical condition and general weight loss/maintenance techniques may not be as effective.
